On February 17, 2023, the CindyMackie Foundation gave out their yearly awards, one a check to the Chester ATL school of $4,500 and another a scholarship to a local student, Julia Wyatt.
Foundation honoring late Winthrop professor Cynthia Furr awarded $15,000 in scholarships Friday. Included was a surprise $900 for Kyle Smith, 12, to continue with music lessons.
Family and friends of a Winthrop University professor and her daughter, who were killed in a car accident, are making sure their passion for life lives one.
The Hinson Girls, A Deeper Shade of Blue and Chappell Road all gave us amazing entertainment. Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church and staff provided a great venue. And our supporters helped us raise over $3500.00 to be awarded as scholarships and grants to continue Cindy and Mackie's legacy. The CindyMackie Foundation thanks you all from the bottom of our hearts!
The hug said it all Friday morning as Sharon Furr embraced another recipient of the Cindy Mackie Foundation Scholarship.
"So when I read through Tyler's essay, I think first I thought, 'you are a Cindy. You're just like a Cindy, you're striving to be everything and more,'" said Sharon Furr, Cynthia's sister.
Tyler Lewis was surprised with the scholarship. He's a senior music major at Winthrop University.
"It's a huge honor to be given this money because I know where it comes from. I know where the donations come from and the heart that is behind it," said Lewis.
The scholarship program honors former Winthrop Professor and Music Minister Dr. Cynthia Furr and her 2-year-old daughter Mackie. The two were hit by a speeding car pulling out onto Highway 49 from River Pointe Drive in 2009.
"We've been on the road since 2010. So far in the last six years-- we'll meet our mark of $100,000 [in grants and scholarships] this year," said Furr.
Lewis said he plans to follow a similar path of Cynthia Furr by pursuing music ministry and business.

Students at the Academy of Teaching and Learning in Chester, received a free book from the Foundation on Read Across America Day.
A smiling senior at York Comprehensive High School led the list of the latest recipients of the awards and grants.
Established in honor and in memory of Dr. Cindy Furr and her daughter McAllister, the Cindy Mackie Foundation is in its second year of awarding scholarships and grants to students who epitomized Cindy's life. Today, Jan. 31, 2012, two students at Clover High School received awards. The students are among nine recipients this year.
